Who we are

ERS

ERS is the leading professional organisation in its field in Europe. It is broad-based, with some 10,000 members and counting in over 100 countries. Its scope covers both basic science and clinical medicine.

ERS mission

ERS seeks to alleviate suffering from respiratory disease and promote lung health through research, sharing of knowledge and through medical and public education.

ERS Leadership

ERS Leadership comprises a Council, an Executive Committee, headed by the President, and a number of dedicated permanent committees.
Future Leaders of the Society are elected by the Executive Committee and members of ERS.

Fellowship of ERS (FERS)

ERS has launched a prestigious new award to recognise excellence in contributions to research, education and clinical leadership in respiratory medicine from amongst the ERS membership.

ERS Membership

ERS membership is made up of individuals working in the field of respiratory health: respiratory specialists, medical practitioners, scientists and researchers and allied health professionals, such as nurses, physiotherapists and technologists.

ERS Assemblies

Assemblies are at the heart of ERS; joining one and participating in its activities are among the most significant benefits of membership.
Assemblies are constituted of members with similar interests within the broad field of respiratory medicine. They are key contributors to the planning of the ERS Annual Congress and play a major role in creating and updating ERS guidelines and statements.
Plenary Assembly Members’ meeting take place once a year during the Annual Congress.

ERS activities

ERS shares and improves the state of knowledge of respiratory health through:
  • Publishing research and state-of-the-art knowledge in its learned journals
  • Bringing together specialists in the field of respiratory medicine at its annual congress and other specialist events.
ERS applies its accumulated knowledge by:
  • Implementing projects under contract in various fields of respiratory health;
  • Providing continuing medical education and training;
  • Compiling handbooks and guidelines for respiratory health professionals;
  • Compiling studies and reviews targeting policy makers and health authorities;
  • Advocating public policy respectful of and committed to respiratory health.

The annual report provides an overview of ERS achievements each year.

ERS status

ERS is a not-for-profit organisation, founded in 1990. Its government, management and modus operandi are laid down in its Statutes comprising constitution, by-laws and rules on conflict of interest.

ERS: what it means

ERS was founded in London in 1990 from the merger of the Societas Europaea Physiologiae Clinicae Respoiratoriae(SEPCR, founded 1966) with the European Society of Pneumology(SEP, founded 1981), it is unique in bringing together basic science with clinical practice within a single entity. More...
